On behalf of the staff and Board of Directors of the Newark Trust for Education, I am proud to share our work with eighty-seven toddlers and their families as captured in the study, Forming Early Learning Habits: Newark ParentChild+ Families and Their Toddlers Redefine Their Homes as Learning Environments by our Senior Research and Evaluation Officer, Pritha Gopalan. ParentChild+ is a parenting and early learning program for parents, caregivers and their toddlers developed by Dr. Phyllis Levenstein, a clinical psychologist, in 1979. The objectives of ParentChild+ are to:
- Increase school readiness and school success;
- Support reading and play activities in the home;
- Build language, literacy, and learning-rich home environments; and
- Support the development of social-emotional skills so children enter school ready to be successful students.
On May 23, 2019 the Newark Trust for Education welcomed over 160 attendees to the second annual Safe and Supportive Learning Environments Citywide Summit. Sessions focused on creating safe and supportive learning environments for our children, both in and out of school. Resources including helpful links, presentations, and readings are outlined below.
In April 2018, the Abbott Leadership Institute (ALI), in partnership with the Newark Trust for Education (NTE), provided the training “Parents Empowered:Building Your Family’s Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Skills” to approximately 50 Newark Public School parents, caregivers and community stakeholders at four locations.
ALI and NTE are proud to partner again for the delivery and expansion of the training series. This year we plan to reach 70-100 parents in seven locations across the city of Newark.Read more

Metis Associates, in partnership with the Center for Research and Evaluation on Education and Human Services (CREEHS) at Montclair State University, was selected in 2017 to conduct a 2-year evaluation of the South Ward Community Schools Initiative (SWCSI). The evaluation, which includes formative and summative components, is designed to document the successes, challenges and lessons learned, and assess the impact of the initiative on key student, family, school, and community outcomes.Read more

The Newark Trust for Education is excited to announce the first Safe and Supportive Schools Citywide Summit, scheduled for Wednesday, May 23rd, 2018 from 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm, with a cocktail reception following. This special event is an opportunity for stakeholders to:
- Share local and national best practices on whole school/district wide approaches to trauma-informed care and social emotional learning.
- Network across sectors and wards.
- Engage with like minds around the notion that social emotional competencies and trauma have an impact on learning.
- Learn about the positive work being done in Newark Public Schools.
As part of our Safe and Supportive Schools Initiative, The Newark Trust for Education is currently accepting applications to participate in the Funders' Collaborative for the 2018-2019 academic year. This competitive grant program is provided to eligible schools in support of creating intentional, coordinated and systematic efforts to provide Safe and Supportive school environments and interventions.Read more
