The Newark Trust for Education, Rutgers' Center for Migration and the Global City(CMGC), and Schools That Can-Newark (STC) are pleased to announce a partnership with Rutgers University-Newark's Newest Americans to create the first cohort of Newest Americans Fellows, focused on harnessing the expertise of high school teachers across Newark to create and test engaging, relevant curriculum.

Brief Description of the Fellowship:

There is very little quality curriculum available about post-1965 immigrant communities, the newest of Americans, or how their experience relates to previous immigrant and migrant histories. There are even less curricular materials available with a Newark focus. Newest Americans is currently developing high school curriculum with study guides from the media we have created, and a multimedia tool kit to enable students to research and represent their own Newark stories and those of their communities and neighborhoods. We now need the experience and expertise of accomplished teachers to help us further develop the curriculum in the classroom.

We are recruiting a cohort of Newest Americans Fellows to participate in a series of half-day workshops from January 2019–May 2019. Each workshop will introduce Newark high school teachers to multimedia “story packages” with corresponding study guides and assignment options. Between each workshop, Fellows will choose an audiovisual resource and classroom exercise for their students to explore the immigrant history of Newark or their own multicultural present. After reporting back on the efficacy of the assignments, Fellows will help refine study guides and curricular toolkits based on their classroom experience. Fellows will be provided a $1,000 stipend for participating in the Fellowship.

Eligibility: Open to all Newark high school teachers.

How to Apply: Those interested must submit this application by Wednesday, October 31st, 2018.

Questions: Please contact Erin Sweeney ([email protected]) with any questions regarding the fellowship or the application process.
