Today, March 27, 2020 marks the first annual International SEL Day! This is an opportunity to spread the word about the importance and impact of social emotional learning (SEL). Working together, we can raise awareness for SEL, bring on new SEL stakeholders, create artifacts that demonstrate SEL in action, share SEL best practices and more!

Social emotional learning (SEL) changes lives—studies show that SEL improves well-being and academic outcomes, builds positive school climate, and provides children with the necessary skills to excel in today’s workforce. Yet many members of our communities don’t know about SEL yet. At Newark Trust for Education we’re doing our part to change this.

The Newark Public Library is proud to offer a robust selection of core and specialized services to patrons through their web, social media and digital platforms, which are all available FREE with your NPL library card!

Students, parents and teachers can take advantage of live online homework help and writing assistance offered by Brainfuse, which can be found by clicking on the link to Kids Place https://npl.org/kids-place/.  Additional educational resources are available through Gale in Context, also found on Kids Place.

Trust Matters: Candidates Forum Update & Coronavirus Resources

In light of the current coronavirus pandemic and to protect the health and safety of our community, the Newark Trust for Education's annual Candidate's Forum will be streamed live instead of hosted before a live audience. The forum will also be recorded and posted to our website for viewing in the weeks leading up to the April 21st election.This format will limit interaction with large crowds and allow for a controlled environment. 

We remain committed to serving as an independent source for information about the 2020 Newark Board of Education election scheduled for Tuesday, April 21.

Introducing Trust Through the Ages

Our team is proud to share with you, Trust Through the Ages: A Brief History of the Newark Trust for Education. This publication captures the growth and development of the Trust, a history that is rich in engaging the community, supporting young people, and collaborating with colleagues.

Deadline Extended: SSLE (Funders Collaborative) 2020-2021 RFP

DEADLINE EXTENDED TO December 18th

As part of our Safe and Supportive Learning Environments Initiative, The Newark Trust for Education is currently accepting applications to participate in the Funders' Collaborative for the 2020-2021 academic year. This competitive grant program is provided to eligible schools in support of creating intentional, coordinated and systematic efforts to provide Safe and Supportive Learning environments and interventions. Participating schools are supported in fostering the social and emotional well-being of students, minimizing behavioral health-related barriers to school success, implementing coordinated student support services, and developing positive school climates.

 

HOW TO APPLY 
To apply for the 2020-2021 Funders’ Collaborative Grant, please use the materials below:

FC Budget Template 2020-2021 – Submit your budget using the template provided. Download the budget template and save to your computer to complete. Other budget formats will not be accepted.

Once you have completed the above components, please submit them by December 18, 2019, using our ONLINE FORM.

Trust Matters: Forming Early Learning Habits & More

On behalf of the staff and Board of Directors of the Newark Trust for Education, I am proud to share our work with eighty-seven toddlers and their families as captured in the study, Forming Early Learning Habits: Newark ParentChild+ Families and Their Toddlers Redefine Their Homes as Learning Environments by our Senior Research and Evaluation Officer, Pritha Gopalan. ParentChild+ is a parenting and early learning program for parents, caregivers and their toddlers developed by Dr. Phyllis Levenstein, a clinical psychologist, in 1979. The objectives of ParentChild+ are to:

  1. Increase school readiness and school success;
  2. Support reading and play activities in the home;
  3. Build language, literacy, and learning-rich home environments; and
  4. Support the development of social-emotional skills so children enter school ready to be successful students.

2nd Annual SSLE Summit: Session Videos Now Available!

This past spring the Newark Trust for Education welcomed over 160 guests to the second annual Safe and Supportive Learning Environments (SSLE) Summit, where experts from local, state and national arenas presented new insights and reinforced the importance of social-emotional learning. For those unable to attend, video recordings of each breakout session are now available.
